Background
New Super Mario Bros. is a remake of the NES classic, Super Mario Bros. and is only on Nintendo DS. Released in May/ June 2006 this side scrolling game has brought the 2D version into 3D.
Story
CAUTION: Spoliers Start Here
The game starts with a cutscene of Mario & Princess Peach enjoying a leisurly walk around the grounds of Peach's Castle. All of a sudden a storm cloud appears and lightning strikes the castle.
Mario sprints to the castle to investigate but whilst he is away Bowser Jr. creeps up behind Peach and snatches her. Mario runs to stop him but is shrunk and Mario has to fight his way through 8 worlds to reach her.
In Bowser's Castle at the end of World 1 Mario triggers a switch plunging Bowser into the lava where his flesh burns and he become Bowser Bones (much like a large Dry Bones).
Bowser Bones returns in the final world and revived by Bowser Jr. and Mario must once again defeat his enemy. Bowser and Bowser Jr. fall into a lava pit and are left as Bowser Jr. drags his father away across the floor.

New Features
There are quite a few new features and one of the main ones is the fact that the game is in 3D. Take the "Wall-Jump" for example. If you accidently mis judge a jump and you end up plunging down a hole you can wall jump to get back up to the surface.
There is also new power ups. These include the "Mini Mario" (Not to be confused with Mario VS. Donkey Kong 2) where Mario is morphed ultra small and can go down small pipes, through small gaps and jump high. This is activated with a Blue coloured Mini Mushroom. Also if Mario gets a blue shell he can become Koopa like swimming faster underwater. Finally there is the Mega Mushroom when Mario is enlarged by several times and can destroy blocks and pipes. The Super Mushroom and Flower stay unchanged in the game
Another new addition is Star Coins. Each level in each world has 3 Star Coins. You can then use the Star Coins to unlock secret paths to new levels and bonuses. Bonuses include toad houses where you can get extra lives or Power Ups. Usually the cost of unlocking a path or toad house is 5 Star Coins.
Also you only need to complete 6 of the 8 worlds to reach the end of the game. Worlds 4 & 7 can only be unlocked if Mario or Luigi beat Bowser/ Bowser Jr. in Mini form.
I mentioned Luigi. Luigi can be used by holding down L & R when selecting a file. However there is no difference between the pair other than the appearence.
